Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen Get a 2013 Face-lift!

Growing Apples in San Diego's Coastal Zone
Apples: Dirty Dozen Plus or Clean Fifteen?

The EWG has just updated its Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen list! The Dirty Dozen is now the DIRTY DOZEN PLUSTM

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is the go-to resource for the now-famous Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen fruits and vegetables. They show which you should (MUST) buy organically to avoid high pesticides, and which have the lowest, even if you choose not to buy organically.

Don’t forget to sign up on their website or download their app to your tablet or smartphone in order to get their updates first-hand. You can download a PDF version of the most current guide as well. You’ll also receive EWG’s exclusive email updates, action alerts and environmental tips.

You can also find all 48 fruits and vegetables with data ranked from worst to best. They analyzed pesticide residue testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration to come up with the rankings.

I hope you found this post useful!

Peace, Love, & (Organic) Veggies!

16 Bugs Gardeners Should Love

Predatory Wasp
Predatory Wasp – Lays eggs inside bad bug larvae (such as the moth larvae above in our sunflowers). The wasp’s young hatch inside and explode the pests  from the inside out!

My daughter shared this news article and slideshow with me, and I just had to share it with you!

Their presence is a gardener’s gift. Repay it by avoiding nonorganic pesticides, says W.M. Hood, professor of entomology at Clemson University in South Carolina.

Spring is afoot here in Southern California, and you’ll be seeing (hopefully) some of these ‘beauties’ in your yard & garden.

Beneficial insects are key to a healthy organic garden and you can do much to attract them and keep them in your yard.

By keeping your yard beneficial insect friendly, these good bugs will keep coming back year after year!

Easy No Measure Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette

Strawberry vinaigrette
Whatcha gonna do with all them berries?

Easy, no measure organic strawberry balsamic vinaigrette

Make how much you need!

You’ll need: Vitamix (or blender)

  • Wash strawberries – do not take nutritious stems off
  • Put a handful or two in the blender
  • Pour Extra Virgin Olive Oil to about an inch below the top of the berries
  • Fill to top of strawberries with balsamic vinegar
  • Add 2 cloves garlic
  • Salt & pepper to taste (I did 4 turns Himalayan salt in grinder)
  • Optional: Add local, raw honey to taste to make up for berries not at full sweetness)
  • Blend on high until your desired consistency, adding filtered water to thin

I play around with this recipe each time based on strawberry sweetness and whim

If you make this, PLEASE please please let me know and share your alterations!
